Assessing a move to new premises

Ahead of a planned relocation we mapped what argues for and against the new premises, and which practical snags the move would create for staff.

The challenge

Decisions about new premises are usually made on floor area, price and location. What determines whether people can actually do their jobs surfaces only as dissatisfaction after everyone has moved in, when it is expensive to put right.

How we approached it

We asked staff about their current working day and about their expectations of the new premises, with open responses for what the numbers miss. The analysis separates advantages, drawbacks and concrete snags, and breaks them down by department and way of working so differing needs become visible.

The outcome

  • Advantages and drawbacks of the move documented with figures, not assumptions
  • Concrete snags identified while they could still be solved
  • Breakdown by department and working pattern, so differing needs became visible

Methods

Employee survey
Cross-tabulation
Open responses
