Survey design and data collection for a non-profit

The organisation analyses and reports on its own. Our role was to design the survey and make sure the data collection was handled properly, on a subject that demands care.

The challenge

The organisation had both the subject knowledge and the capacity to interpret its own figures. What it needed was confidence that the data would hold up, and that the collection itself would not place an undue burden on a vulnerable group.

How we approached it

We designed the survey together with them and advised throughout the fieldwork: how questions should be worded on a sensitive subject, how participants can answer at their own pace and skip what they would rather not address, and which choices along the way would otherwise introduce bias into the data.

The outcome

  • A dataset the organisation could analyse and report on entirely by itself
  • Collection designed so participants could answer at their own pace, and decline anything they preferred not to answer
  • Guidance through the process rather than a finished report, so the expertise stayed inside the organisation
